I used Google’s My Tracks app to record my hike through Ten Mile House trail just outside of Chico, CA. It was only a short distance before I left the trail for rarer sights.
It was hardly but a stroll going downhill. Cash, the German shepherd I brought with me, got lost on the way, but eventually we found each other and made our way down to Big Chico Creek. His exuberance for the water inspired me to join in, so I ended up skinny dipping in water so cold that it chilled my dong until it hurt. The mosquitos were also goddamned vicious down there, each one sticking me like a pin prick any time I left the safety of my ice bath.
Then we began the journey back up; this part was not easy. I always underestimate inclines, but eventually I found my groove. Cash, while initially at a noticeable advantage, tired too, so we both hit the most difficult part while plum tuckered. I had lost the trail we took down, so instead I pushed straight uphill, knowing that eventually we’d have to hit the highway. I was right, but not until I cleaved my way through an insane amount of brush that even the dog couldn’t get under at points. To Cash’s credit, he did not falter at any point, and even dramatically jumped a crevice that I had to cross via suspended tree root.
Finally, we literally climbed up and out of the brush and back onto the trail. On the path back, we passed a young woman who was noticeably uncomfortable being alone on a trail with a filthy man who had a machete strapped to his back and his large dog. But, when I grabbed Cash to keep him from bothering her, she could tell I wasn’t interested in murdering her and gave me a nice smile. I found it a pleasant note to end the trip on.
I was literally pouring sweat for the later part of the hike, yet I enjoyed the entirety of it, even the part where my dick got frostbite. Watching it over again using Google Earth really brings an additional level to the experience, not to mention statistics and a record of your mistakes. I highly suggest trying My Tracks if you’re into outdoor activities.
I’ll be uploading some photos I took during the hike next.
